چکیده

The growth kinetics of 6 species of marine heterotrophic nanoflagellates (5 to 13 pm) were compared. The maximum spec~fic growth rates (p,,,) of the flagellates ranged from 0.035 to 0.21 h ' and the half-saturation constants (K,) ranged from 1.1 to 45 X 106 bacterial cells ml-' Theoretical threshold concentrations were calculated for each flagellate and the values of these generally ranged from 2 to 10 X 104 bacterial cells ml-l . The flagellate yield values ( Y ) , maximum uptake rates (U,,,) and maximum clearance rates (F,,,,) for each flagellate species ranged from 0.3 to 13.2 X 10-3 cells bacterium-', 5 to 259 bacteria cell-' h ' and 1 to 58 nl cell-' h ' respectively while volume-specific clearance values ranged from 1.4 X 104 to 8.7 X 10' body volumes h '

Temperature effects on the heterotrophic bacteria, heterotrophic nanoflagellates, and microbial top predators of the NW Mediterranean

Prokaryotes and protists are important players in the carbon biogeochemistry of marine ecosystems, and temperature is one of the physical factors most influential in the metabolism and composition of plankton communities. Small changes in temperature can change the flow of carbon and the community structure of planktonic ecosystems, and climatological models predict a rise in temperature of 2 t...

Regeneration of phosphorus and nitrogen by four species of heterotrophic nanoflagellates feeding on three nutritional States of a single bacterial strain.

Three physiological states of a single bacterial strain, namely, balanced, phosphorus-rich, and nitrogen-rich bacteria, were obtained by culturing a bacterial strain in chemostats under three different nutrient regimens. Each was shown to be distinctly different in elemental composition with respect to C/N/P ratio. These bacteria were fed to four species of heterotrophic nanoflagellates in batc...

Effect of zooplankton-mediated trophic cascades on marine microbial food web components (bacteria, nanoflagellates, ciliates)

To examine the grazing effects of copepod-dominated mesozooplankton on heterotrophic microbial communities, four mesocosm experiments using gradients of zooplankton abundance were carried out at a coastal marine site. The responses of different protist groups (nanoflagellates, ciliates) and bacterioplankton in terms of abundance and additionally, for bacteria, diversity, production, and exoenzy...

Microbial loop in an oligotrophic pelagic marine ecosystem: possible roles of cyanobacteria and nanoflagellates in the organic fluxes

In an attempt to quantify the organic fluxes within the microbial loop of oligotrophic Mediterranean water, organic pools and production rates were monitored. The production of cyanobacteria and its dynamics dominated the overall productivity in the system. The largest standing stock was that of the bacterioplankton and its growth consumed 8.3 pg C 1-' d-', hence about 60 % of the primary produ...

Influence of pollution history on the response of coastal bacterial and nanoeukaryote communities to crude oil and biostimulation assays.

Pollution history has often been proposed to explain site-dependent bioremediation efficiencies, but this hypothesis has been poorly explored. Here, bacteria and their heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) predators originating from pristine and chronically oil-polluted coastal sites were subjected to crude oil ± nutrients or emulsifier amendments. The addition of crude oil had a more visible eff...
